Hayden, Shelby and the boys are excited about Halloween. As the big day arrives, Mom and Dad prepare them for trick-or-treat, dressing them in their new costumes. But in spite of the festivities, Shelby is worried. Mom has to work on Halloween at the animal shelter where she is a volunteer and he is afraid for her. Recently, Shelby overheard Mom and Dad talking about strange happenings there. Little does he suspect the terror that awaits Mom…in Shelter Pet, A Halloween Story.
This book chronicles the rescue of six separate cats, each caught in their own unfortunate set of circumstances. These circumstances are sometimes due to mishap, but more often are the result of the thoughtlessness, ignorance or even cruelty of people who have little or no sympathy towards the feelings, needs and basic rights of animals. However, due to the concern and intervention of one married couple these six lost or abandoned animals are saved and given the opportunity to find happiness and a forever home together.
Each cat’s story of rescue is told from their perspective and details the emotional “roller coaster” they experience on their journey. With the help of their new Mom and Dad, they prosper in their new setting and learn about love, caring and sharing as they build a life together as one big happy family. It’s a heartwarming tale in the spirit of “Black Beauty” about the hardships animals experience because of the meanness and shortcomings of the people who care for them and upon whom their life depends.
Many valuable lessons are unveiled as the story unfolds, all of which are important lessons for children to learn. Be kind to animals and the less fortunate; be thoughtful of others; it is better to give than receive are just a few of the lessons that are apparent in the story. Parents will be pleased at the positive lessons and values that are constantly illustrated throughout the story. Parents and children alike will be pleased by the ending, which is, of course, a “happy” one, although this is not always the case in the “real world.” But I would like to think, this book is making an effort to remedy that by illustrating to the reader that when one cares and gets involved one can change the world for those suffering and make it possible for them to find happiness again.
I also would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge that there are many good and kind individuals that care deeply and go out of their way to make a difference and help animals in need; ordinary, everyday people like “Mom and Dad” and the “nice old lady” in the book; people like the employees, volunteers and donors of animal shelters who work tirelessly and give much of their time to meet the needs of these less fortunate creatures. But it is a constant and seemingly endless battle for these many good hearted individuals who care to make up for the actions of even a few of the bad individuals who don’t because these actions have such far reaching negative effects. For example, one of the biggest obstacles to overcome is the failure of people to spay and neuter their animals. Doing this would drastically reduce the number of homeless animals and the waves of kittens that flood animal shelters each year. It would reduce the number of senseless euthanasias of healthy animals at overcrowded shelters and pounds across the nation and cut the population of feral cats who struggle to survive. It is disturbing and downright shameful to see how many adult animals come into the shelters unaltered. There is just no excuse for this. Charities and clinics have made the simple procedure of spaying and neutering very accessible and affordable.
I feel the best weapon against this battle of ignorance is education and knowledge. With this book, “The Adventures of Hayden and Shelby ‘ Welfare Cats,” I am putting my faith and hope in our youth by trying to instruct young minds to be aware of the problems and pain of these creatures, to be sympathetic and empathetic and to know they can do something about this tragic situation.
All profits derived from sales of the book will be donated to local animal charities of Catty Ann’s choice.
